Drive like a comic-book speedster

Every superhero comic has one: the speedster who sees the world in slow motion while everything around them seems frozen. That's the feeling we wanted on a phone screen. The road never stops speeding up, and past a certain point only your reflexes keep you alive.

Road speed over the course of a run Speed climbs in a straight line from 300 to 880 pixels per second over the first 170 seconds, then holds. With Turbo on it is 35 percent higher, up to 1188. 1200 900 600 300 0 0 s 60 s 120 s 170 s 880 px/s Turbo 1188
Road speed in pixels per second. Values taken straight from the game's code.
  • 2.9× fasterYou start at 300 px/s and hit 880 at 2 min 50 s. From there the speed stays maxed out and the rest is up to you.
  • From 2.15 s to 1.10 sThat's the gap between two waves of cars. Early on you have time to think; by the end you react or you crash.
  • +25 for a near missSlip past a car with less than 80 px to spare, just over half a lane, and the game pays you for the nerve.
  • Turbo: +35% for 6 sMore speed means more distance, and distance scores too: 18 points a second at the start, close to 53 at top speed, 71 with Turbo on.
Turbo active at 52 seconds: an orange ring around the car, speed streaks on the road and 2,898 points in the display.
Turbo at 52 seconds into a test run. The orange ring shows how much is left, and the blue streaks on the road only appear once you're really moving.

Coin · coins and records

Every coin is worth more than the last

Coins show up in runs of three to five, always in a free lane. Grab one within 2.2 seconds of the previous one and the combo goes up a level, to a maximum of x5. Each coin is worth 10 points times the combo. Coins can't be bought or traded for anything: they're only there for points and for beating records.

Run of 5 coins, combo at zero

coin 1 10 × 1 = 10
coin 2 10 × 2 = 20
coin 3 10 × 3 = 30
coin 4 10 × 4 = 40
coin 5 10 × 5 = 50
         total 150 points

Same 5 coins, picked up loose: 5 × 10 = 50
Already at x5 from the start: 5 × 50 = 250

The combo is worth three times the coin. A full run gives you 150 points; the same five coins with pauses in between give you 50. Reach the next run still at x5 and every coin is worth 50.

The Magnet protects your combo. For 8 seconds it pulls nearby coins into your lane, which is the easiest way to hold x5 through a stretch full of cars.

The bar under the combo counter in the corner of the screen shows what's left of the 2.2 seconds. When it empties, you're back to x1.

Magnet active at 68 seconds: a magenta ring around the car, a line of coins in the right lane, a police car in the left lane and a x5 combo with 93 coins.
68 seconds in with the Magnet on: 93 coins, a x5 combo and 5,104 points on one of our test runs.

Challenge whoever's next to you

There's no online leaderboard and no account to create: records stay on this device. To compete with friends, all you need is the end screen and a rule you agree on before you start.

  1. Pick a category. Points reward risk-takers, coins reward combo chasers, time rewards the careful driver.
  2. Three runs each, best one counts. One run is luck; three is a game.
  3. Screenshot the "Crash!" screen as proof. It shows the points, time and coins for that run, plus your all-time bests.
  4. The loser picks the next category. That way nobody gets stuck with only what they're good at.

Power-ups

Three power-ups, one at a time

One appears every 11 to 16 seconds. Picking up a new one replaces whatever you're holding, so timing matters.

What's in the game

Easy to start, hard to put down

Open it and drive

No downloads, no account, no launcher. The whole game is a 149 KB web page: open it and you're racing in two seconds.

All three lanes never close

Every wave has one or two cars, never three. There's always a way out; the hard part is spotting it in time once police cars make up four in every ten.

Built for your phone

Tap either side of the screen, swipe, or use the big buttons. The game pauses itself when you switch tabs or apps.

Sound made on the fly

There are no audio files: engine, coins and crashes are synthesized by the browser. Each coin's pitch climbs with the combo, so you hear x5 before you see it. Press M to mute.

Same at 60 or 144 Hz

The simulation runs in fixed steps of 1/120 of a second. On an old phone or a gaming monitor, the cars arrive at exactly the same moment.

On-screen buttons, always there
  1. Don't sit in the middle lane out of habit. Two-car waves close two lanes at once, and the free one is usually on an edge.
  2. Chase the combo, not the coin. One coin at x5 is worth the same as five loose ones.
  3. Spend the shield early. It runs out on its own after 8 seconds; a saved shield is a wasted shield.
  4. Watch the combo bar, not the score. The score only tells you how you did. The bar tells you whether the next coin is worth 10 or 50.

Questions

Before you hit play

Is it really free? What's the catch?

There isn't one. This web version has no ads, no purchases and no account. We put it online so people can play before the Android release and tell us what they think.

When is it coming to Android?

We don't have a date yet, and we're not going to make one up. If you want to know when it's out, email [email protected] and we'll reply once there's news.

Are the coins worth money or prizes?

No. Coins are only a score inside the game: they can't be bought, sold or exchanged for anything. The only prize is the record.

Where are my records kept? Can I lose them?

They're kept in your browser's local storage, on this device. They never reach us. If you clear the site's data or play in another browser, you start from zero.

Does it work on an older phone?

Any phone with a current browser should run it: the whole game is 149 KB and the physics don't depend on screen refresh rate. If yours struggles, tell us the model and browser and we'll look into it.

How long can you last?

Free, instant, and it remembers your best run.
